U.S. Chamber Calls on Congress to Provide Additional Support for Individuals, Families, and Employers As Pandemic Drags On

Thursday, July 16, 2020, Washington, D.C. - U.S. Chamber of Commerce CEO Thomas J. Donohue sent a letter today to congressional leaders urging swift action to combat the coronavirus pandemic and provide economic relief to families, businesses, and communities across the country.

"We have not yet beaten the coronavirus or achieved the economic recovery that we all desire," Donohue wrote. "With the benefit of our experience to date and fresh data, Congress should enact proposals that are timely, temporary, and targeted to current needs. The Chamber urges policymakers to be judicious in their approach. While it is critical that Congress provide meaningful assistance to the unemployed, employers that continue to be negatively impacted by social distancing requirements, and state and local governments, it is also critical that we avoid counterproductive policies that will delay economic recovery or diminish long-term growth."
U.S. Chamber Applauds National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) Modernization Ruling

As we've previously shared, earlier this year, the Trump Administration announced steps to modernize the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) to improve environmental permitting and reduce delays that are hampering the construction of infrastructure projects. Yesterday, the U.S. Chamber applauded the Trump Administration's release of long overdue updates to NEPA.

Data Show Economy Heated Up in June

The resurgence of COVID-19 will likely slow the nascent economic recovery. However, the data we have for June, when we had increasing economic reopening, continues to show the economy was heating up.

The Pros and Cons of Transforming Into a Virtual Company-Permanently

When I started my business in 2008, the idea of working from our homes didn't really occur to my partners and me. After working in the same office for many years, we were comfortable sharing a workplace. We leased office space for nearly 18 months before realizing how much money we could save by working remotely. And 12 years later we're still operating virtually. So, when the pandemic hit, our operations were not affected as much as other businesses having to transition employees to work from home.

The Arts Are Big Business - and in Real Trouble

The performing arts and entertainment industry is in real trouble thanks to COVID-19 - the sector's workers, venues, and organizations are in desperate need of help because of the shutdown. The nature of the way it functions (lots of close contact, mainly indoors) means it's going to be among the last to reopen: most live performance is cancelled until at least 2021, and television and film production is still trying to figure out when it can start up again. Many workers are freelancers, a lot of the others usually working full time have been furloughed or laid-off, and there are individuals and organizations running out of money to pay studio and theater rents (not to mention their own personal bills). The business is facing a devastating crisis, and is in desperate need of help.

Financial Transaction Tax Could Hit Average Spanish

Since Pedro Sanchez first became Spain's Prime Minister in 2018 and, now, in conjunction with the left-wing coalition party, Unidas Podemos, he has been working to overhaul the Spanish tax system. The main measures to increase revenue entailed higher taxes for businesses and high-income earners. In the face of the economic shock delivered by the pandemic, the government considered it urgent to move ahead with its fiscal agenda despite opposition within Spain's parliament and tensions within the coalition government. Additionally, since January 2019 the government has been trying to get two major taxes passed: the so-called Google tax (a 3 percent digital services tax) and the financial transaction tax (FTT).

BBB Scam Alert: Home Title Fraud
July 16

BBB received a call from a consumer this week about ads for services claiming to protect people from fraudulent property title transfers.  The consumer wanted to know if this really could happen.  The short answer is, yes.  Home title fraud happens when someone obtains the title to your property and changes ownership from your information to theirs.  The scary part is, you may not even realize it until it's too late.

Every mother should make the choice that's best for her.
