Millions of people have thyroid glands that don’t make enough thyroid hormone to meet their body’s needs. Hypothyroidism, also called underactive thyroid, is the most common reason some people need thyroid hormone replacement.

Hypothyroidism is treated by replacing the hormones that your own thyroid can no longer make. Thyroid hormone medicines mimic these hormones.

Thyroid hormone has been used as medicine for decades. The first versions of thyroid hormone medicines were made from the thyroid glands of pigs or cows and are not approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Today, there are modern, synthetic (laboratory-made) medications approved by the FDA. Most patients with hypothyroidism use these modern thyroid replacement drugs.

During the first part of 2021, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics(BLS) found that 22.7 percent of working Americans were still working from home because of the COVID-19 pandemic. That’s fewer than the number working from home last summer, when BLS first started gathering data. BLS also found that 35.4 percent of workers were doing their job from somewhere other than the office. 

The Biden administration’s proposed American Jobs Plan (AJP), American Families Plan (AFP), and fiscal year 2022 budget would increase federal spending by about $4 trillion over 10 years, including $1.7 trillion for infrastructure, partially funded with higher taxes on individuals and businesses as well as increased tax enforcement.

Using the Tax Foundation General Equilibrium Model, we estimate the tax proposals impacting individuals and businesses would increase federal revenue by about $1.3 trillion conventionally over 10 years. In addition, the administration claims about $700 billion in additional revenue from tax enforcement. We estimate the combination of revenue and spending proposals contained in the president’s budget would reduce U.S. gross domestic product (GDP) in the long run by 0.9 percent and result in 165,000 fewer U.S. jobs.

The Uber era arrived in Puerto Rico on July 11, 2016, initially with several restrictions but ultimately, progress could not be stopped, and Uber became part of our lives. Until the pandemic, it had more or less 4,000 drivers islandwide. One could get an Uber from Kennedy Avenue to Hato Rey for $8 during rush hour. Other times we requested an Uber for a concert from Dorado, knowing this long trip could cost $70 each way; instead, we paid $32.00 each way. Additionally, most of my friends would let their high-school or college kids use Uber to go to La Placita or parties, becoming everyday routines for both parents and children. These new modern routines had been the norm in the millennial way of living from July 2016 to March 2020. As the pandemic hit and Uber had already become a public company, the price points for most trips changed overnight.
