We are neuroscientists based in Lisbon and Berkeley who study how the brain shapes our behaviors in the laboratory, so that we may learn to make better decisions in our lives.

You routinely make choices that are much more complex than they seem. Right now, in choosing to play this game you may wonder: Is it worth my time? Could I be doing something better? Your memories, desires, and imagination weave together in a mysterious way as you ponder. So, how do you choose?
We made hexxed to study this question. We designed the game so that it is simple enough to study scientifically, yet complex enough to challenge the mental abilities of human players. Now we aim to collect data from tens of thousands of players like you. Why? Because mapping the creative impulse that fuels intelligence requires many repeated observations. Each of you arrives at the game with a unique history and tendencies, meaning that you can interpret the game in highly diverse and fluid ways. Nonetheless, based on our work in the lab, we believe that the commonalities across players will outweigh the differences, allowing us to map a territory of intelligent play, and see how people move through it.
Within one year, we will share our findings at hexxed.io, so that you may see how you and your fellow humans solve problems.

Engaging and fun
While the menus are still buggy currently, the gameplay itself is really fun. It takes some time to get used to, but after playing for long enough you get your own theories on how the game works!
Not ready for public use
The game is a fun challenge and I enjoy contributing to real research, but this application was not tested enough to be released. It is so full of bugs that it is impossible to use. The most glaring issue is that the app is permanently locked upside down, but besides that the options on the “survey” section are too small to tap and the options that are displayed are not aligned with where it senses my touch. For such a complex and unexplained game, I need to have confidence that the app is actually working the way it’s supposed to before I spend time trying to figure out if I’m playing right.
Unbearable design
Is having an upside down app part of the game??? This is very unappealing if you intend to engage any audience. The survey choice buttons are so tiny even my small hand and very thin fingers can’t get the scale right ** I don’t know what type of data will be collected...Were there no user testing or we are part of that?
Let me try to look past all those issues. And PLAY the actual game, the prompt should remind me to be ready to enter an uncharted territory and learn to make rules/sense on my own...
