Comunicado: Junta de Supervisión propone reabastecer el Fondo de Emergencia
 
La Junta de Supervisión y Administración Financiera para Puerto Rico anunció hoy que propuso a la Gobernadora y a la Legislatura de Puerto Rico reabastecer el Fondo de Emergencia, que forma parte del Plan Fiscal Certificado.

La Junta de Supervisión propuso dirigir hasta $536 millones, incluyendo los superávits de presupuestos de años anteriores, mediante una partida para reabastecer fondos utilizados por el Gobierno, particularmente tras las emergencias del huracán María, la tormenta tropical Dorian, los terremotos y la pandemia del COVID-19.

The latest recipients of government warning letters are six companies that said they could speed U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) loans for businesses struggling to stay afloat during the COVID-19 pandemic. The letters - from the FTC and the SBA - direct the companies to remove all false claims from their websites immediately.

According to the FTC and SBA, the letter recipients may be misleading consumers that they are affiliated with the SBA or about their role in helping businesses get SBA Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loans. As a result, small businesses that applied for the loans through the listed websites may be left empty-handed.

Aluminum Tariffs on Canada 'Would Be Like a Bad Horror Movie'

Yesterday, there were reports that the administration is considering re-imposing tariffs on aluminum imports from Canada. Neil Herrington, Senior Vice President for the Americas at the U.S. Chamber, issued the following  statement:

"Bringing back these tariffs would be like a bad horror movie. Most of the U.S. aluminum sector opposes them, and they'll hurt American manufacturers who use aluminum as an input. Canada will surely retaliate against U.S. exports. This is the wrong way to mark the entry-into-force of the new North American free-trade agreement on July 1."

Improving the Tax Treatment of Residential Buildings Will Stretch Affordable Housing Assistance Dollars Further
A recent Brookings Institution study points out that "even before the COVID-19 crisis, housing affordability and instability were serious problems." The study outlines a number of goals and strategies for increasing the supply of affordable housing, including federal subsidies, low-cost loans, and grants. These may well be viable solutions, but what is missing are policies that make it less costly for developers to build and operate rental housing. Lawmakers can do that immediately by improving the tax treatment of residential housing.

Executive Summary 

  • The coronavirus outbreak has thrown the U.S. & Puerto Rico into a systemic risk crisis that will result in close to 10,000 to 15,000 business closing and losing another 100,000 jobs in Puerto Rico. While robust institutions may be able to brush off the impact of the adverse effects of the pandemic, a significant majority of Businesses in Puerto Rico will not be able to recover. 
  • The direct impact increased of the COVID-19 lockdown is north of $9.7 billion, with the total result being more than 45% higher than any jurisdiction, on account of the extended lockdown.

Is It Possible to Be Immune From COVID-19?

The Journal of General Virology published an article on May 20 aiming to answer some of these questions. The paper is a review, meaning it gathers together information from multiple other studies. A lot of the information detailed in these studies comes from knowledge of the six othercoronaviruses that have been discovered. That's right - the virus causing COVID-19 is not the only coronavirus out there. There are four coronaviruses that circulate seasonally and cause the common colds and two viruses (SARS-CoV and MERS-CoV) that, like SARS-CoV-2, have crossed from animals to humans. These other coronaviruses have been studied in much more detail than the current virus and can be used to make inferences about SARS-CoV-2 based on their genetic similarities. The authors of the article explained to Science Daily, "SARS-CoV-2 is a new virus in humans and because of this we are having to learn quickly many of its basic properties. In the absence of such data right now, we can try to make predictions about the immune response to SARS-CoV-2 by re-examining what we know about the two epidemic coronavirus of humans, SARS and MERS and the four seasonal human coronavirus. We need to be cautious about inferring too much, but it is a good place to start."

Aunque se ha probado que el aislamiento social es la manera más eficaz de reducir el contagio, sin duda trae consigo profundos desafíos económicos que afectan directa e indirectamente a los negocios pequeños, medianos y grandes. Es decir, a las empresas que generan los empleos que mueven la economía de un país, pagan la  renta y alimentan familias.

Como todos los años, nuestra Institución llevará a cabo el proceso de votaciones para su Junta Directiva 2020-21. Este año, las votaciones serán de forma remota a través de internet, mediante la Red Virtual de Socios, y no habrá votaciones en persona. Esto debido a la pandemia del COVID-19.
 
Es requerido, para que pueda ejercer su derecho al voto, haber cumplido con el pago de su cuota anual correspondiente al año 2019-2020 y estar registrado como representante de su empresa con derecho a voto. 

El período de votaciones comenzará el miércoles, 10 de junio de 2020 a partir de las 12:00 del mediodía y finalizará el viernes, 26 de junio de 2020 hasta las 12:00 del mediodía. El escrutinio de votos se llevará a cabo el viernes 26 de junio de 2020 a partir de la 1:00 p.m.
 
Próximamente recibirá una notificación por correo electrónico con las instrucciones para emitir su voto remotamente. La comunicación solo se enviará al contacto principal de la empresa, asociación o individuo. 

IMPORTANTE:
  • Recuerde que ES UN VOTO POR SOCIO (empresa o asociación), 
    por lo tanto, una vez que uno de los representantes con derecho a voto emita el sufragio por la empresa o asociación, los demás representantes con derecho a voto no podrán votar

  • El proceso de votaciones no será interrumpido en ningún momento una vez inicie, por lo tanto, podrá emitir su voto de forma remota en cualquier momento (24/7) desde el 10 de junio a las 12:00 del mediodía hasta el viernes 26 de junio a las 12:00 del mediodía.  
  • Si su organización no recibe la comunicación para emitir su voto, favor de escribirnos a: [email protected] a partir del 10 de junio de 2020 a las 1:00 p.m.
