Chamber of Commerce Reveals Key Findings on Consumers' Priorities
Top concerns: COVID-19, jobs, energy costs, permits and federal assistance

More than five months into the coronavirus pandemic, Puerto Rico residents have not only had to adapt to strict government measures and health protocols, in what some have called the "new normal," but they are also very concerned about their jobs and sources of income as a result of COVID-19's impact on their finances in an already battered economy.

A survey conducted by the Puerto Rico Chamber of Commerce (PRCC) tried to measure if the private sector's concerns were validated by public opinion, explained Juan Carlos Agosto, the entity's president.
The scientifically based study consisted of surveying 600 people from different backgrounds and municipalities around the island. According to Agosto, the study has a margin of error of 4.2 percent.

Are you married to someone who owes past-due child support? Was your portion of the economic impact payment ("EIP") mistakenly applied to pay your spouse's debt? If so, you're not alone. In mid-September, the IRS will automatically send "catch-up" payments to eligible spouses whose EIP was diverted to pay their spouses' child support obligations.

Update: What's Happening in the Economy, Policy, Politics, and More

An Update From Our CEO

Remember the time when August in Washington was mostly quiet? Those days are long gone, especially in an unprecedented year like 2020.

There has been plenty of activity on Capitol Hill as lawmakers wrangled over topics like Phase 4, the Postal Service, antitrust hearings, and more-though there has been little to show for it so far. We continue to put pressure on lawmakers to take the necessary steps to help businesses and workers while advocating for pro-growth progress on a range of priorities-namely, liability protections to prevent businesses from a flood of warrantless lawsuits-necessary to our economic recovery.

In the Economy...A K-Shaped Recovery?

Six months into the pandemic, we continue to track the economic recovery. While we had hoped for the quick snapback of a V-shaped recovery, it increasingly looks like we are settling in for a K-shaped recovery (discussed further in a blog by Suzanne Clark) where things sharply rebound for some but keep declining for others.

In the Policy Arena ...

With the political power balance in Washington being decided in November and Congress scheduled to conclude its final legislative sessions by October 12, the stakes are high and the time is short for a number of critical legislative priorities. From Congress to the courts to executive action by the administration, here are five top issues to watch:

In politics...

With the November 3 election fast approaching, our political efforts have shifted into high gear for the final stretch.
The Senate: Our top priority is maintaining a pro-business majority in the Senate. The Chamber rolled out new ads mentioning incumbent Republican senators in IowaMaine, and North Carolina last month.

In trade...

While some suggest turning inward in response to COVID-19, we must not let shortsighted reactions to this new challenge erase 70 years of historic global economic growth. The Chamber continues to advocate for the removal of trade barriers and a renewed commitment to strong international partnerships and multilateral institutions.

In Cyberspace...

COVID-19 has accelerated years of technological advancements into a few short months, and we know that digitalization will play a big role in our global economy moving forward. To support that growth, we must protect our critical systems, automate our processes, and upgrade our legacy networks to better prepare for the future.

In Healthcare...

Amid all the pain and uncertainty caused by COVID-19, the pandemic has also provided an opportunity for businesses to show firsthand how they can do well by doing good. One way many businesses do that is by providing high-quality health care to their workers through employer-sponsored insurance.

In the Nation...

If 2020 hasn't been sufficiently challenging, a series of disasters over the past month-a devastating derecho windstorm in Iowa, destructive Hurricane Laura along the Gulf Coast, and wildfires still raging in California-have heaped further pain on families, businesses, and communities.

In History...

The Chamber joined the nation in commemorating two significant historic milestones last month, the 100th anniversary of women's suffrage and the 57th anniversary of the March on Washington.

BBB Scam Alert: Photo sharing message
phishes for your Google password
September 4

Don't let your curiosity get the better of you. A new scam appears to be an email from Google, informing you that someone has shared a photo album with you. But it's really a phishing scheme that's after your password.

How the Scam Works
You get an email or text message that appears to come from Google Photo. Someone is sharing an album of photos with you. To view the photos, you just need to click the link. The message looks so real! It may use a convincing URL, which has been created by Google's goo.gl URL shortener to appear to be an official Google domain name. The message also seems to come from the email [email protected].

Placing Joe Biden's Tax Increases in Historical Context

Supporters and critics of Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden's tax plan have made a variety of claims about the size of the tax proposals, ranging from "not big enough" to the "biggest tax increase in history." Comparing his tax proposals-which include higher taxes on high-income earners and businesses paired with more generous provisions for households and specific activities-to historical tax changes is helpful for analyzing these claims.

Census Bureau Mails Additional Questionnaire to Households That Have Not Yet Responded to the 2020 Census

SEPT. 3, 2020 - The U.S. Census Bureau is sending an additional paper questionnaire to over 16.2 million households in low-responding census tracts. About 84.9% of households have completed the 2020 Census with 65.2% self-responding online, by phone or by mail.

This final mailing began to arrive in homes on Aug. 22. All mail packages are expected to arrive by Sept. 15. Only nonresponding households that have received only one paper questionnaire in the mail may receive this mailing. This mailing is the last in a series of reminders the Census Bureau has mailed to nonresponding households since mid-March urging them to respond. [READ MORE]
