Reflections on a Record Year for Novel Device Innovation Despite COVID-19 Challenges
As we look ahead this year, it is important to pause and reflect on the important milestones the U.S. Food and Drug Administration reached in 2020 to help strengthen the public health. Among those milestones is the work the FDA’s Center for Devices and Radiological Health (CDRH) accomplished in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, while keeping up with the Center’s ongoing work and continuing to bring a growing portfolio of innovative devices to patients. Most notably, the FDA approved, cleared, or authorized (“authorized”) a record high of 132 novel medical devices in 2020, surpassing the 40-year high mark we set in 2018 and capping off 10 years of progress. It is a big leap from the 29 novel devices we authorized a decade ago, in 2010.

Path Forward: COVID-19 Variants and What You Need to Know

On Wednesday, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation hosted the latest episode of the Path Forward series designed to help business and community leaders find the answers they need to execute a responsible reopening strategy and plan for a post-pandemic world.

In this week's episode, U.S. Chamber president Suzanne Clark sat down with COVID-19 Genomics UK Consortium director Sharon Peacock and Harvard Medical School's Dr. Jonathan Li to discuss why the virus is mutating, what the variants that have been discovered in the UK and South Africa mean for infection rates, and how we can ensure tests, therapeutics and vaccines remain effective. Dr. Li also shared findings from a patient in Boston who offered “surprising clues” to the origins of coronavirus variants.

Which States Are Taxing Forgiven PPP Loans?
The U.S. Small Business Administration’s Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) is providing an important lifeline to help keep millions of small businesses open and their workers employed during the COVID-19 pandemic. Many borrowers will have these loans forgiven; eligibility for forgiveness requires using the loan for qualifying purposes (like payroll costs, mortgage interest payments, rent, and utilities) within a specified amount of time. Ordinarily, a forgiven loan qualifies as income. However, Congress chose to exempt forgiven PPP loans from federal income taxation. Many states, however, remain on track to tax them by either treating forgiven loans as taxable income, denying the deduction for expenses paid for using forgiven loans, or both. The map and table below show states’ tax treatment of forgiven PPP loans.

Why Government Policies Matter

In my new book, How to Avoid a Climate Disaster, I talk about the inventions we need to get to zero, like new ways of storing electricity and making steel. We founded Breakthrough Energy to help accelerate that innovation.

But innovation means more than inventing new things. It’s also a matter of developing new policies so we can demonstrate and deploy those inventions in the market as fast as possible.

Honoring a Forgotten Medical Pioneer
February 22

Black women have made significant contributions to medicine and public health but all too often, their stories are overlooked and forgotten. Today, we’re honoring the life of Dr. Rebecca Lee Crumpler, a pioneer in our country’s medical history as the first Black woman to earn a medical degree in the United States, back in the 1860s.
