Sustainable alternatives to eliminate waste for local restaurants

As part of the Bottom Up Destination Recovery Initiative's efforts to promote business and community resilience, 50 Borikashi waste fermenters from Trito Agro-Industrial Services, Inc. (TAIS) will be delivered in the coming days to small businesses in the municipalities of Cabo Rojo and San Germán. The delivery will be accompanied by compostable products and recycling containers.

Through the delivery of these products, as well as guidance on its use, Bottom Up aims to encourage businesses to reuse and recycle solid waste, thus promoting the circular economy model.  This initiative is based on encouraging the recycling of all our organic waste. In the particular case, the kits are intended for business owners who contribute large amounts of organic waste, such as restaurants.

BBB Scam Alert: This get-rich-quick con promises fast money
on Cash App
October 30

You see a photo of a pile cash on social media. In the caption, the user brags about having "flipped" a couple hundred dollars into thousands. Want to do it, too? It's easy. Just message the account holder. The "investor" will ask you to send money - typically $300 to $800 -  through Cash App or another digital wallet service. Then, they "invest" your money in the stock market where it multiples in a few days.

The Critical Key is Timing

As we publish The Zenith Investor for November 2020, we will elect a new Governor and a new President.

The coronavirus outbreak has thrown hospital systems throughout Puerto Rico and the World into a systemic risk crisis that includes both medical and financial. While robust institutions may be able to brush off the impact of the Pandemic's adverse effects, most hospitals in Puerto Rico will not be able to recover.

*As of October 30, Puerto Rico has accumulated 65,743 positive cases, with 820 deaths. When we analyzed the same numbers on September 17, Puerto Rico had 38,284 cases, with 570 deaths. These numbers represent a growth rate of 63.60% in total cases and 38.27% in mortality over the last month.

Linking Ecosystem Service Values to Rangeland Practices
in the Central Great Plains

November 12  |  3:00 p.m.

Ecosystem services are things that nature provides that people value. Those services, such as reduced flooding risk and improvements of air and water quality, can be linked to NRCS's conservation practices, expanding the effects of conservation well beyond the ranch's fence line. A comprehensive approach to assessing the impacts of conservation practices entails an exploration of linkages to ecosystem services and their economic values. This information could help NRCS better align conservation assistance policies and tools with resource concerns and adding ecosystem service values into our conservation planning process could help motivate increased conservation adoption by farmers and ranchers.

In this webinar, presenters Loretta Metz (NRCS, CEAP-Grazing Lands) and Angela Fletcher (Earth Economics) will highlight methods and findings from the recent Earth Economics report, "Accounting for Nature's Value with USDA-NRCS Conservation Practices in the Central Great Plains." Funded by the Conservation Effects Assessment Project-Grazing Land component, this research develops a methodological framework that links conservation practices to the ecosystem services they impact and values those impacts using benefits transfer. Findings from a pilot study in the Central Great Plains include an estimated increase between $1.7 to $3.5 million/year in ecosystem service value from only two NRCS rangeland practices. In addition to discussing ideas for how to include these services in the planning process, the presenters will also identify data gaps that could be filled through research and other partnerships.
