Foundation for Puerto Rico lanza nueva herramienta digital para potenciar la planificación y la resiliencia en comunidades vulnerables del País
-La iniciativa, subvencionada con fondos CDBG-DR, es parte de la primera fase de una plataforma que continuará desarrollándose con el fin de garantizar a los ciudadanos un mejor acceso a la información pública-
(San Juan, Puerto Rico)- La organización sin fines de lucro Foundation for Puerto Rico (FPR), en colaboración con el Departamento de la Vivienda estatal, publicó hoy los Mapas Interactivos de Capital Social, una novedosa herramienta digital que desarrolló como parte del Programa de Planificación Integral para la Resiliencia Comunitaria (WCRP, por sus siglas en inglés). Esta plataforma piloto permite a la ciudadanía la visualización de datos y mapas interactivos que contribuyen a mejorar la planificación, potenciar el desarrollo económico y la resiliencia en las comunidades locales en riesgo de ser afectadas por fenómenos atmosféricos y otros eventos naturales. Esta herramienta es un paso previo a la publicación del Aviso sobre la Disponibilidad de Fondos (NOFA, por sus siglas en inglés) para la implementación de este Programa.

Reforestan a Puerto Rico desde la cuarentena
La organización CYEN Puerto Rico invita a la población a reforestar desde el hogar durante la cuarentena. Mediante esta actividad, los participantes podrán ser parte de un proyecto de reforestación que está creando parques frutales en comunidades alrededor de la isla. Esta iniciativa es una excelente oportunidad para generar menos desperdicios, aprovechar las semillas locales y germinar árboles que servirán para alimentar a comunidades en un futuro.
Durante la cuarentena, CYEN Puerto Rico orienta a familias y voluntarios para que reforesten al país desde su hogar. Los participantes reutilizan envases desechables de plástico o aluminio que tengan disponibles. En estos tiestos hechos en el hogar, le colocan tierra y semillas de los frutos del país que se consuman en casa. Luego de cuidarlos, cuando estén listos para transplantar, las voluntarias de CYEN las recogerán para sembrar en comunidad.
Tras el paso de los huracanes en el 2017, el grupo CYEN Puerto Rico comenzó la labor de reforestar al país con árboles frutales y semillas. Hasta la actualidad, han llevado plantas a 3,000 familias en los 78 municipios. El proyecto comenzó visitando hogares y ahora trabaja creando parques frutales que proveerán frutos gratuitos y sanos para comunidades.
"Esta iniciativa es una oportunidad para aquellas personas que están buscando alternativas para ayudar a Puerto Rico desde su casa" comenta Amira Odeh, miembro de CYEN. "Desde nuestra organización le ofrecemos apoyo y orientación para que aportemos nuestro grano de arena hacia un país con seguridad alimentaria y comunidades resilientes ante emergencias y desastres".

Developments That Matter
Manufactured Goods Orders Fell Sharply in March
 The latest data is new orders for manufactured goods from the Census Bureau . They fell more than 10% in March. An almost 300% drop in airline orders, due to Boeing's suspension of 737Max production, drove that figure lower. But consumers and businesses also cut spending on manufactured goods, as stay-at-home-orders began to mount and unemployment spiked. Consumers will start to spend on these items once they go back to work and their confidence rises. Businesses will similarly start to spend when customers do. Boeing restarting 737Max production will help too. But the data for April, once it comes out in early June, will likely show an even bigger drop than March because the Great Pause extended the entire month.

Chamber Asks Congress to Help Nonprofits
Like many other organizations, nonprofits have been financially harmed during this crisis. Some have had to close their doors, while others are on the brink unless Congress acts.
A coalition of 3,738 organizations, including the U.S. Chamber, sent a letter to Congress urging to extend relief to local chambers of commerce, civic groups, trade associations, and other nonprofits so they can continue to provide important, community-minded services. "Our groups contribute to the vitality and spirit of our communities," the letter states. "We employ thousands of people and provide important workforce development and educational tools, economic support, and civic and cultural events."
Number of Coronavirus-Related Lawsuits Explodes
Last week saw an explosion of new litigation relating to the pandemic. Approximately 100 new filings brought the total number of cases to well over 350. Plaintiffs sought to consolidate some of the cases into multi-district litigations, while courts issued important decisions on stay-at-home orders and workplace liability.

Chamber's Bradley: 'The Small Businesses We Represent All Want to Do the Right Thing'
Chamber Executive Vice President and Chief Policy Officer Neil Bradley appeared on Cheddar on Friday to give an update on small business loan programs and discuss the regulatory concerns facing businesses as they plan to reopen. The speed in which funding for the Paycheck Protection Program has dwindled "just helps emphasize the cost of shutting down the economy, particularly for folks on Main Street," said Bradley. On small businesses trying to figure out how to reopen, he added: "We're looking to public health officials for their guidance, and then we want to empower employers to implement that guidance." "The small businesses we represent all want to do the right thing," he said. 501(c) Sign-On Letter to Congress

It's #GivingTuesday...Today's the day to change lives
 A 5.5-magnitude earthquake was recorded last Saturday in the south part of Puerto Rico. This disaster caused more damage to the communities already facing significant distress due to the tremors earlier this year and the recent COVID-19 pandemic.
In January, we quickly responded to the traumatic events by financing two immediate relief programs that continue to assist victims by auditing home structures and providing emotional support.
The global health crisis also exacerbated the needs of local enterprises, farmers, fishers, NGO's, and many others that are key to Puerto Rico's sustainable recovery. In an effort to prevent the shutdown of small businesses, we partnered with a local nonprofit offering capacity building and training to guide entrepreneurs in these challenging times.

SBA to Make Economic Injury Disaster Loans Available to U.S. Agricultural Businesses Impacted by COVID-19 Pandemic
WASHINGTON - U.S. Small Business Administration Administrator Jovita Carranza announced today that agricultural businesses are now eligible for SBA's Economic Injury Disaster Loan (EIDL) and EIDL Advance programs. SBA's EIDL portal will reopen today as a result of funding authorized by Congress through the Paycheck Protection Program and Healthcare Enhancement Act. The legislation, signed into law by the President one week ago, provided additional funding for farmers and ranchers and certain other agricultural businesses affected by the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
