Puerto Rico is at an important point of transition after three major disasters in three years and more than a decade of economic decline. Through multi-sectorial efforts, we can take deliberate and forceful steps to change the direction of Puerto Rico’s economic development agenda to promote economic growth and recovery, with an emphasis on inclusive strategies. To that end, Foundation for Puerto Rico created the Fast Forward Puerto Rico discussion series, and yesterday we were honored to host a conversation with Julie Chávez Rodríguez, director of the White House Office of Intergovernmental Affairs for the Biden-Harris administration, to help share insights and perspective that will help sharpen our focus and magnify our impact.

La actividad reunió líderes del sector privado, incluyendo representantes de MIDA, CUD, Industriales, Cámara de Comercio, Hecho en PR, ASORE, AGC-PR, Asociación de Constructores y GUIA. WASHINGTON - The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and Puerto Rico’s housing department, Departamento de la Vivienda, today announced two partial approvals of Vivienda’s Action Plan, approving the use of $6.2 billion in Community Development Block Grant Mitigation (CDBG-MIT) funding for Puerto Rico.

“HUD and the Biden Administration are committed to working with Puerto Rico to reset our relationship on the island’s recovery efforts, and the action we are taking will play a key role in this effort by ensuring that Puerto Rico is able to access and spend critical disaster and recovery funds on urgent unmet needs,” said Arthur Jemison, HUD’s Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for the Office of Community Planning and Development.

President Joe Biden is calling for a third round of economic impact payments to households as part of his $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan. Under the plan, the payments would be $1,400 per person, topping off the recent round of $600 payments for a combined $2,000 per person. Senate Republicans have proposed payment amounts of $1,000 per individual and $500 per dependent, lower income thresholds, and faster phaseout rates.

Sanjay will interview Dr. Leon McDougle, president of the National Medical Association. Dr. McDougle is an expert in racial disparities in health care and will discuss the organization’s history and how the past can shine some light on the challenges of reaching Black Americans with the COVID-19 vaccine.
