WASHINGTON - Today, U.S. Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross announced that the Department's Economic Development Administration (EDA) is awarding a $1.1 million grant to the University of Puerto Rico, San Juan, Puerto Rico, to hire three Disaster Recovery Coordinators to execute disaster recovery efforts throughout the entire Commonwealth. The project, to be located in a Tax Cuts and Jobs Act designated Opportunity Zone, will be matched with $266,400 in local investment.
"The Trump Administration is fulfilling its promise to help Puerto Rico recover after the devastation of Hurricanes Irma and Maria in 2017," said Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross. "The disaster recovery coordinators hired at the University of Puerto Rico will serve as liaisons between local, state, and federal partners to further advance recovery efforts and rebuild the local economy back stronger than ever before."
"In 2018, EDA made $587 million available to eligible grantees in communities impacted by natural disasters in 2017," said Dana Gartzke, Performing the Delegated Duties of the Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Economic Development. "We are pleased to support collaborative economic recovery efforts to help Puerto Rico further recover following Hurricanes Irma and Maria and to do so in Opportunity Zones across the island."
"We thank President Trump and Secretary Ross for this important EDA grant awarded to the University of Puerto Rico," said Governor Vázquez Garced. "As the island continues to recover from Hurricanes Irma and María, the recent earthquakes, and as we battle the COVID-19 pandemic, my Administration is taking the necessary steps to guarantee that Puerto Rico has access to available federal funding to aid in the recovery process. We welcome this partnership and look forward to continue collaborating with the U.S. Department of Commerce through this process."
"This allocation of millions of dollars demonstrates once more that the federal aid continues to be assigned to the reconstruction of Puerto Rico after the devastation caused by Hurricane Maria," said Puerto Rico's representative in Congress, Jenniffer González Colón. "Moreover, it highlights the accomplishment of including Puerto Rico in the designations of opportunity zones which adds to our recovery, causing substantial investments such as these."
The funding announced today goes to a designated Opportunity Zone, created by President Donald J. Trump's Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017, Opportunity Zones are spurring economic development in economically-distressed communities nationwide. In June 2019, EDA added Opportunity Zones as an Investment Priority, which increases the number of catalytic Opportunity Zone-related projects that EDA can fund to fuel greater public investment in these areas. To learn more about the Commerce Department's work in Opportunity Zones, please visit EDA's Opportunity Zones webpage. To learn more about the Opportunity Zone program, see the Opportunity Now resources page here.

Washington, DC - U.S. Members of Congress wrote the Puerto Rico Department of Education today, urging the agency to ramp up distribution of school meals to low-income students. While the Island and its school system have been on lockdown in response to the COVID-19 pandemic for nearly a month, meals have not been distributed to students. On April 7, the Department announced it would partner with local nonprofits to distribute meals to children. However, few details on how that plan will be executed have been released.
Among other requests, the letter, led by Rep. Nydia M. Velázquez (D-NY), presses the agency on: when meals will be made available; how many meals students will receive daily; and whether adults in need will also be able to access food, as is occurring in school districts like New York City and Los Angeles.
"For many Puerto Rican families in need, school is a vital food source, ensuring children consistently have access to healthy meals," Velázquez said. "Puerto Rico has the highest child poverty rate in the United States, and it would be unconscionable for these children to go hungry due to inaction. With the pandemic cutting families off from this vital nutritional link, we need to know what the Department is doing to get food distributed quickly. There's no time to waste."
In addition to Velázquez, the letter is signed by: Reps. Caroline B. Maloney (D-NY); Alexandria Ocascio-Cortez (D-NY); Raúl M. Grijalva (D-AZ), the Chairman of the House Natural Resources Committee; and Darren Soto (D-FL).

Remarks by President Trump, Vice President Pence, and Members of the Coronavirus Task Force in Press Briefing
THE PRESIDENT: Thank you very much. Thank you. Thank you. This is a holy week, when religious believers across the nation will observe Passover, Good Friday, and Easter. Millions of Jewish families begin Passover at sundown tonight, a sacred, unbroken tradition that traces back to the ancient land of Egypt. And on Sunday, we celebrate our beautiful, wonderful Easter, which we all look forward to. And we're going to have many Easters together in churches in the future.

Telehealth Plays Big Role in Coronavirus Cure
"As our country responds to the unprecedented coronavirus pandemic, we are working rapidly to change the way we practice medicine to keep people safe," Surgeon General Jerome Adams and CMS Administrator Seema Verma write in the Orlando Sentinel.
"One critical innovation is the use of telehealth, which allows patients to use smartphones, laptops, and other widely available technologies to connect with your healthcare team . . . For the duration of the pandemic, Medicare beneficiaries may now stay at home and use a commonly available interactive form of technology like FaceTime or Skype to have a telehealth office visit."
"President Trump was right this week to sharply criticize the inexcusable conduct of the World Health Organization (WHO) regarding the novel coronavirus pandemic . . . The WHO bears responsibility for helping China spread the coronavirus far beyond China's borders. What should have been merely a local outbreak that began in China became a worldwide pandemic as a result of the actions of Beijing and the WHO," Gordon Chang writes for Fox News.
"In the midst of Holy Week, which is also supposed to be the point of peak coronavirus deaths, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo was able to deliver some welcome news": Over 50,000 U.S. citizens have been safely returned home from more than 90 countries. "This worldwide scale of our repatriation efforts is without parallel in our lifetime," Secretary Pompeo said. Read more from Fred Lucas in The Daily Signal.
"The first obligation of every president of the United States since the founding of our nation has always been to protect the American people from harm. President Trump invoked his powers under the Constitution and under laws to do this when he ordered illegal immigrants and asylum seekers to be immediately deported to combat the spread of the coronavirus," Thomas Homan, former Acting Director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, writes for Fox News.

Lawmakers and Hispanic Federation Call on Inclusion of All Latinos Including Immigrants and Puerto Ricans in Next COVID-19 Relief Bill
NEW YORK, NY - During a video press conference today, Congressional Hispanic Caucus Chairman Joaquin Castro of Texas and Rep. Adriano Espaillat of New York joined Hispanic Federation in calling for COVID-19 disaster relief for all Latinos, including immigrants and Puerto Ricans who receive limited assistance in the previous three aid packages enacted by Congress. The news conference took place as House Speaker Nancy Pelosi begins discussions on provisions for the next relief bill which will have an "infrastructure" theme.
Hispanic Federation is urging Congress to pass a bill that secures the health and safety for all people, regardless of immigration status or geographic location; orders the release of immigrant detainees --adults and children -- who are being held in unsafe conditions and are even more susceptible to contracting the deadly virus; and to ensure that Puerto Rico is given greater access to programs in the $2 trillion CARES Act enacted a week ago.
